Yvonne Moore - Galgorm Resort & Spa
Leaders in Business - Yvonne Moore is general manager at Galgorm Resort & Spa, one of Northern Ireland’s most prestigious destinations for conferences, weddings and accommodation. While you would think such a business would bear the brunt of recession, the company has reported an impressive jump in profits and, as such, Yvonne stands out as a leader in business in the hospitality world.
Yvonne has been general manager since June 2008, taking up the position not long after its £17 million refurbishment, which catapulted the resort into the international league of truly opulent hotels and spas. She currently heads up a workforce in excess of 200 people.
Galgorm Resort & Spa has gone from strength to strength under Yvonne’s leadership. During an extremely challenging economic climate, Galgorm Resort & Spa has bucked the trend posting excellent sales and profit figures. Turnover this year is expected to be in excess of £8million with profits up 110% on the previous year; a remarkable achievement in these recessionary conditions.
“A blend of increased sales and a systematic approach to reducing costs has really driven our financial success over the last year and a half.” says Yvonnne. “This focus on cost structure and delivering a superior guest experience has certainly helped us gain competitive advantage during what has been an unpredictable period for the entire industry.”
Yvonne has led a concerted effort by Galgorm Resort & Spa to diversify the offering, with the addition of a number of new packages aimed at growing both mid-week and weekend business. She has increased sales and marketing activities to capture new markets whilst ensuring a highly personalized relationship with the Resort’s regular guests, ensuring that offers are fresh and interesting to them. Galgorm Resort & Spa’s impressive new website launched in 2009 has also been instrumental in driving business upwards.
Under Yvonne’s leadership, Galgorm Resort & Spa has grown in reputation internationally. Its luxurious spa was hailed by Condé Nast Traveller in 2008 as one of the hottest new spas in existence. During 2009 it was voted second Best Spa in the World by OK! Magazine and also featured on ITV’s LK Today.
The Resort has also received a number of prestigious culinary accolades, including 2AA Rosettes for culinary excellence in the River Room Restaurant and the much sought-after Grub Club Award for 2008/09 which is awarded to the best eating establishment experience in Northern Ireland.
“We are always particularly delighted to gain awards such as these as they are based upon real experiences of guests. They truly reflect the efforts of our staff and the pride they take in their work and service to guests. These awards also impact on the commercial success of the business.”
Galgorm Resort & Spa is currently one of Northern Ireland’s premier wedding venues and Yvonne has big plans to ensure it is in the top ten wedding venues in the whole of Ireland and the UK within the next couple of years. The Resort recently invested significantly in its wedding offering which included a luxurious refurbishment of The Great Hall in 2009.
“We also aim to grow the leisure side of the business, particularly in conjunction with the Spa which has just launched the prestigious Eve Lom product range and treatments adding to the world class spa portfolio.”
Recognising that people are pivotal to the success of a business like Galgorm Resort & Spa, staff development is extremely important to Yvonne. Her plans for 2010 include a comprehensive management mentoring programme and the Resort is currently working towards Investor in People accreditation. “I am supported by a truly excellent team who are hard working and highly dedicated.”
So what does 2010 mean for Galgorm Resort & Spa?
“In 2010, we will continue to explore and grow new markets and will expand our packages to ensure they remain fresh and appealing for guests. Service standards are extremely important and we will focus on improving this still further by investing in training and development of our staff.”
Yvonne is aware that 2010 will be a challenging year for the hospitality industry but her determined approach and ambitious goals for Galgorm Resort & Spa will likely steer it through another highly successful year.
