HP has announced that its Belfast operation HP StorageWorks has been designated as a Global Centre of Software Engineering Excellence to develop groundbreaking products based on HP's cloud computing software platform.

The centre of excellence, which is the first of its kind in Europe, will provide cutting-edge storage solutions such as data protection and recovery technologies to organisations internationally. The announcement comes as HP celebrates its 30th year of operating in Northern Ireland and forms part of a multi-million pound investment. HP Ireland Managing Director Martin Murphy told Ulster Business the company had decided to base the centre of excellence here because its Belfast-based R&D team had a proven track record of delivering results. "It is the first centre of excellence for software engineering in Europe and that is a terrific achievement for the team there and a very substantial platform to work from," he said. "They are now going to be focused on developing solutions that are part of our overall cloud strategy around data recovery and data protection. So this is positive from an NI plc perspective because it will bring an additional R&D capability and it will also be in the cloud space, which is really the game changing area within IT." Mr Murphy said HP would be bringing additional jobs to Northern Ireland as a result of the decision, and while he did not disclose the number of jobs, he said the company would be going on an aggressive recruitment drive. "We are looking for people to fill high end, high value roles. The reason we decided to expand the capability here is that we felt we would get access to the talent that's here. We expect to be able to fill the roles very easily based on our market intelligence," he said. Further details of how skilled technology professionals can join HP's local software development team are available at www.HP.com/go/jobs.
