Dr Peter Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Randox Laboratories and recipient of the 2013 Innovation Founder of the Year Award, is congratulated by Ciaran McGivern, Head of Business Banking, Bank of Ireland, sponsors of the 25k Awards.

Dr Peter Fitzgerald, Managing Director of medical diagnostic company Randox Laboratories Ltd, has been announced as the 2013 winner of the Innovation Founder of the Year Award.

Innovation Founder of the Year, part of the 25k Awards made by NISP CONNECT, recognises the efforts of entrepreneurs whose unique ideas and positive contribution to the community have helped put Northern Ireland innovation on the map.

The award, made following public nominations and a subsequent judging panel of previous Award winners, salutes Dr Fitzgerald's contribution to biochemical research and the local economy.

Dr Fitzgerald was working in the research department of Queen's University Belfast when his passion for science and his observation of the 'brain drain' of young talented scientists prompted him to set up a local manufacturing facility for diagnostic products.

Starting in 1982 with six people, including three family members, he has grown the business to employ over 1,200 staff across headquarters in Northern Ireland and in Randox offices distributed worldwide.

The focus has been on the development of better, more sensitive tests for existing diagnostic parameters, and keeping abreast of new trends and developments by devoting 30% of the company's revenue to research.

Dr Fitzgerald will be formally presented with his award at this year's 25k Awards Gala, being held at Titanic Belfast on September 26.

Peter Edgar, NISP CONNECT programme manager, said: "Dr Fitzgerald is a very worthy winner of this year's award, which celebrates those who have successfully engaged in the commercialisation process to transform ideas into profitable science and technology business.

"By recognising Dr Fitzgerald's contribution to our knowledge economy, we hope to inspire others to begin their own entrepreneurial journey. Randox is a shining example of the talent, skill and drive which Northern Ireland can bring to the rest of the world."

Ciaran McGivern, Head of Business Banking, Bank of Ireland UK, added: "This award is a wonderful opportunity for the Northern Ireland Business community to recognise an individual and position them as an inspiration for both current and future generations."
