Keep ahead of rapidly changing technologies in your industry to make sure you’re not left behind in an increasingly globalised world.

That was the message from Snowpatrol drummer Johnny Quinn to an audience of business leaders in Belfast this morning as he described how both the band and his own company need to constantly adapt to keep up with the changing manner in which consumers listen to and buy music.

He was speaking at the BT Business Innovation Breakfast at the Titanic building in Belfast where he explained how revenue for a band such as Snowpatrol has switched from CD sales to online downloads from sources such as iTunes and Spotify and how the power of social media has helped the likes of Ed Sheeran break into the business.

“The world’s changing in so many ways and it’s crucial you don’t get left behind,” he told host Jim Fitzpatrick.

Johnny also runs his own business, Polar Patrol Publishing, which is a music publishing service for songwriters, artists and musicians, helping place music in films and advertisements and also collecting royalties.

The drummer was joined on stage by one-time public relations guru Chris Johnston who is founder and chief executive of Adoreboard, a tech start-up company which can measure the emotions of consumers to particular products, people or brands.

He explained how being able to quantify how much product exposure was worth has proved a vital piece of knowledge for companies around the world.

Paul Convery, Head of BT Business, also related the company’s introduction of BT Cloud Voice, a virtual phone system hosted in the cloud which does away with the need for hardware or maintenance.

“With an increasingly mobile and flexible workforce it is becoming crucial that businesses remain in touch with staff as well as clients with a telephone system that works hard for them and keeps everyone connected. BT Cloud Voice does just that, giving local businesses a competitive advantage while our reputation gives companies the confidence to know that they are purchasing a quality and reliable service from an established and trusted provider.”
