Fiesta remains in pole position as new car sales climb

The Ford Fiesta's enduring popularity has seen it take the top spot once again

The number of new car keys handed over to buyers in Northern Ireland during April has inched higher, led once again by the Ford Fiesta, latest data has shown.

A total of 4,447 new cars were registered here last month, a jump of 1% on the same time last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

That brings the total number of new cars sold since the start of the year to 22,742, a figure which is struggling to keep up with the pace of sales witnessed last year.

Northern Ireland is the only UK region where new car registrations since the start of the year are down – by 1.4% to the end of April – with numbers in England, Scotland and Wales all creeping higher.

Because buying a new car is a big financial outlay and needs security in buyers’ future finances, the SMMT data is often used to give an insight into consumer confidence.

It’s thought the dip in sales in Northern Ireland could be a result of the delayed introduction of public sector spending cuts here.

Meanwhile, the Ford Fiesta continues to top the list of the most popular cars sold in 2015 with 1,013 leaving Northern Ireland’s forecourts.

In second place comes the Volkswagen Golf at 725, followed by the Ford Focus at 723.

It’s much the same in the other UK regions with the Fiesta dominating the top spot everywhere apart from Scotland where it’s pushed into second place by the Vauxhall Corsa.
