The new jobs are across the store in its café, fresh food counters, bakery, grocery and customer services as well as the online department. It will bring the total number employed in the store to 300.
Sainsbury's also said that over coming weeks it will recruit for more than 150 seasonal roles across its stores in Northern Ireland to help cope with the Christmas and New Year rush, many of which could become permanent.
Nigel Macaulay, Regional Operations Manager for Sainsbury's said: "We are delighted to be bringing additional employment to the north-west through our Strand Road store and indeed across Northern Ireland through our seasonal recruitment process.
"We have been listening to the needs of our customers in the northwest and it is fantastic to be able to now provide the Derry/Londonderry area with an online shopping service which will be launching on 20th November as well as an extended and upgraded store offering."
Steven Pollock, Sainsbury's Strand Road store manager added: "We have been working hard to ensure that the on-going work will be carried out with minimum disruption for customers. We are doing the vast majority of the work while the store is still open but we will have a one week closure next week from 5th- 12th November to finalise the process. We are looking forward to working in an exciting, new store with a much more extensive offering and launching our new online delivery service, something we are sure will be welcomed by customers."
The upgrade work on the Strand Road store is due to be complete mid-November.
